With Gearbulk's long history of doing business in Japan and our enduring partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, the devastating tsunami that swept over Japan's shores in March 2011 hit very close to home and heart.
Employees from Gearbulk's Tokyo office journeyed to Ishinomaki City 300 km away to join other volunteers helping to clear away debris. Triggered by a massive earthquake which measured 9.0 on the richter scale, the tsunami hit Ishinomaki City especially hard. This relatively small fishing port lost more than 3,000 people, the highest toll of any coastal town caught in the tsunami's path.
Two months after the disaster, all Gearbulk's offices joined together to show their support with a Global Morning Coffee fundraiser on 25 May, raising a total of $7,720 and Gearbulk donated Y10 million to the Japanese Red Cross.
The Kristian Gerhard Jebsen Foundation also donated six electronic whiteboards to Ishinomaki City's primary schools. This is being followed by a seven-year educational support programme for orphaned students in the town's municipal junior high and high schools.
